1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
This free program encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before they start kindergarten. Studies show that children should hear at least 1,000 books from birth to age 5 to build the pre-reading skills they need to succeed in school.
The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your child. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your child starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in 2 years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think!
Here is how the program works:
- Read with your child. Reading with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding and will create life-long memories for the both of you.
- Write down the titles of the books you read on the reading log sheets. You can pick up additional sheets at the library or print them from our website. Make sure to keep a record of any book that is being read to your child. This includes teachers and siblings.
Each time you reach 100 titles, bring in your book log and receive a prize!
The only deadline for this program is when your child starts kindergarten, so take your time and enjoy the experience. Let the library help you get a jump-start on your child’s success in school. Stop in often to check out books, attend free programs, and get reading suggestions.
Visit the front desk for instructions and reading logs, or download them directly.
Happy reading!
